GSU World Heritage Initiative

In the fall of 2016, the GSU World Heritage Initiative began developing a Serial Nomination of U.S. Civil Rights Movement Sites for the National Park Service Office of International Affairs (NPS OIA) to consider submitting for possible inscription on the World Heritage List. The GSU World Heritage Team is working with numerous civil rights scholars and historic preservationists to identify and assess potential sites for consideration.

The long and complex process is guided by the NPS OIA that will make the final selections regarding the sites of the Serial Nomination. Ultimately the decision to place the sites on the World Heritage List will be made by the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
